Convicted for unauthorized access into a government system three years ago. A breach that the courts labeled intentional, even though everyone who actually knows him agrees he's not the type with the skill or motive to pull something like that off.

He served his time and was released on parole, now working small jobs and keeping his head down to avoid anu violations. Not a bad guy. Just a gut caught up in something way above his head. To most people, Joel is forgettable; to those who really know him, he's loyal, funny, and not nearly as careless as his record makes him look.

When Rafael hears his name, it's only because someone believes Joel didn't actually do what he was convicted for... And that belief becomes the first loose thread Rafael pulls.
