Chapter Three: Anomalies
"A Lot To Unpack"
THE SCENT OF PANCAKES LINGERS IN THE AIR, warm and sweet, as sunlight filters through the curtains. A golden glow bathes the room, softening the edges of the moment as Danielle leans over her daughter's bed.
"Samaya," she whispers, brushing a strand of hair from the girl's cheek. "Time to get up."
Samaya stirs but doesn't open her eyes. For a moment, Danielle lingers, taking in her daughter's peaceful expression. There's something about mornings like these that she clings to—a fragile calm before the storm of duty and distance.
The weight of the day ahead looms, but for now, she lets herself pretend it's just another ordinary morning.
Samaya's eyes flutter open, still heavy with sleep but already alight with curiosity. "Mommy, what're you doing?" she mumbles, her voice tinged with that perfect blend of innocence and early-morning rasp.
Danielle brushes a hand through her daughter's curls, savoring the softness. "Hey, Nugget. Mommy's going to see your brother, sweetheart. But don't worry, I'll be back later."
Samaya's eyes narrow with mock suspicion, her sass already on display. "I was about to say! You forgot there's no school today, didn't you?"
Danielle chuckles, catching the spark in Samaya's eyes. "Never. But how about this—we plan something special for when I get back? Any requests for an afternoon adventure?"
Samaya tilts her head, lips pursed in thought. "Hmm... how about a magical tea party with cookies and stuffed animals?"
Danielle can't help but smile. "A magical tea party it is. We'll make it the most enchanting tea party in the kingdom."
Samaya's expression brightens, a gleam of mischief taking over. "Can we invite all my stuffed animals? Even Mr. Lucas? He's shy, but he can take our pictures."
Danielle laughs softly. "Absolutely. Mr. Lucas is an honorary guest. Maybe your action figures want to join in too. They might enjoy a magical quest during the tea party."
The idea makes Samaya bounce with excitement. "Yes! And the cookies can taste like rainbows and the tea can sparkle!"
"You've got quite the imagination, my little magical thinker." Danielle gives her a warm smile. "Now, go enjoy Aunt KK's pancakes, and I'll join you for our enchanted tea party later. Deal?"
Samaya grins and seals the deal with a hug. "But you have to promise to wear your special tea party dress."
Danielle's eyes widen in playful shock. "How could I forget? I'll wear the most magical dress in the kingdom just for our tea party."
The quiet hiss of the door reveals Kayla, Danielle's sister, who's been watching the whole exchange. The light outlines her with a soft warmth as she takes in the scene, her smile gentle but knowing.
Then Samaya's voice cuts through the air, curious and hesitant. "Mommy, can we invite Daddy to our tea party too? I think he might like it."
For a moment, Danielle's smile tightens, a flicker of conflicting emotions behind her eyes. Love, disappointment, the constant balancing act of putting Samaya's happiness first. "Sweetheart, Daddy's pretty busy, but maybe we can plan something else special with him—like a picnic in the park. What do you think?"
Samaya's face lights up. "Okay! A picnic sounds fun. I'll ask Daddy if he can come."
Danielle's smile softens. "That sounds wonderful. We'll make sure it's special." She presses a kiss to Samaya's head. "Now go enjoy those pancakes and tell Aunt KK about our magical plans."
As Samaya scampers away, Danielle takes a breath, watching her daughter with that unique blend of fierce love and quiet gratitude.
Kayla steps into the room, the soft click of the door signaling a moment of privacy. They exchange glances, a silent understanding passing between them—both fully aware of the weight on Danielle's shoulders.
The looming deployment before Thanksgiving hangs heavy in the air, adding another layer of strain. Danielle exhales quietly, her voice tinged with weariness. "This is the hardest battle I've ever faced."
Kayla's response is firm, laced with sisterly confidence. "And you'll get through this one too."
Danielle's eyes soften, a trace of sadness clouding the morning light. "I wanted to be here for the holidays. Now, I don't even know when I'll be back."
The weight of past trauma lingers beneath the surface, but Danielle's steady recovery—through time, therapy, and a strong support system—keeps her anchored. Even so, Kayla senses the unspoken struggle and offers a comforting suggestion. "We'll create new traditions. I'll make sure they feel your presence, even if you're away. Maybe we can figure out something special for you to connect with them during the holiday."
Danielle gives a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, Kay. That means a lot."
Kayla tilts her head with casual curiosity. "Sooo, where are you taking my car to?"
"Taking a few things to Tye's apartment."
Kayla raises an eyebrow, smirking. "Now you're the one making deliveries?" They share a small laugh, the kind only sisters can share.
Suddenly, the door creaks open, and Samaya shuffles in, squinting against the light. "I must've missed the memo that said pancakes meant something else." Laughter fills the room as they all head to the kitchen together.
Kayla, glancing at the box of files on the kitchen table as she places down a plate of pancakes, "You sure you want to handle all this today, Dani?" she asks, glancing at the box of files on the kitchen table. "It's a lot before deployment."
Danielle's voice is firm, tinged with a stubborn determination. "I need to get it done. I want all his stuff out before I leave." Her gaze shifts to where Samaya's munching on her pancakes, oblivious to the weight in her mother's voice.
"Mommy, are you going on another adventure?" Samaya asks between bites.
Danielle forces a smile. "Something like that, Nugget. Just some work Mommy has to do."
Kayla leans against the counter, curiosity lingering. "Any idea what this mission's about?"
"Not really," Danielle replies, a hint of tension in her voice. "They're keeping it locked down this time. Just got a note saying my experience in Mongolia will come in handy." Her tone is edged with a mix of pride and the burden of what that might mean.
Samaya, catching only the pride, grins wide. "Mommy's a badass motha—"
"Samaya!"
"What? That's what Daddy says you are." Samaya's innocence is a striking contrast to the complex emotions swirling in the room.
Danielle shakes her head, smirking. "Daddy has a unique way of putting things." She kneels beside her daughter, meeting her eyes. "But you know what? Superheroes always need a sidekick, and that's where you come in."
Kayla chimes in, grinning. "And don't forget about me."
Samaya giggles. "Aunt KK, you're the superhero's superhero!"
Danielle ruffles Samaya's hair. "You bet she is." Laughter fills the kitchen as they all embrace the warmth of the moment, a brief reprieve from what looms ahead.
Kayla's concern lingers, even through the lighthearted exchange. "Dani, make sure you take care of yourself out there. We've got your back here, but you've got to have yours too."
"I will, Kay. You know I've got you and Nugget watching mine from here."
Samaya's confidence is unwavering as she looks up at her mom. "Mommy's a hero and a survivor. She always comes back."
Danielle's chest tightens at the words, a rush of love and the bittersweet reality of what that promise entails. "That's right, Nugget. I always come back to my favorite people."
A subtle undercurrent of pride and support weaves through their words. Samaya's admiration for her mom shines, the lighthearted banter returns, but beneath it, the weight of the impending mission and family ties pulse quietly. These are the moments Danielle treasures most, the ones that remind her why she pushes through the impossible.
DANIELLE DECIDES IT'S TIME TO TAKE THE BOX OF FILES OUT TO THE CAR. She lifts the box, feeling the weight of both paperwork and memories, and makes her way to the door.
Samaya, still enjoying her pancakes, looks up with a mouthful and says, "Mommy, will you be back in time for our magical tea party?"
Danielle, kneeling down to Samaya's eye level, assures her, "I'll do my best, sweetheart. If not, Aunt KK will make sure it's the most enchanting tea party ever, okay?"
Samaya nods with determination, "Okay, Mommy. Be safe."
With a gentle smile, Danielle heads out to the car.
As Danielle steps outside with the box of files, the air is thick with the lingering dampness of last night's rain. Puddles reflect the sky's muted light as she balances the box while trying to open the car door.
It's different from other personally owned vehicles because it's also a courier pod. The door opens differently.
In a swift, frustrating moment, the box slips from her hands, scattering papers across the wet driveway.
Danielle freezes, eyes narrowing at the mess before her. She takes a measured breath, kneeling to gather the documents—each one a reminder of how easily control can slip. Her gaze lingers on a particular folder labeled "The Merchant." The name sends a chill down her spine, pulling her in.
Flipping through the now slightly damp pages, she notices the account activity for a specific individual. The moisture has caused some details to blur, with numbers from several transactions bleeding together, creating streaks across the paper. The account name reads David, A., listing transactions over the past two years. Her husband's handwriting catches her attention, circling a date—Decembra 19—and labeling it "Day Zero."
A bitter taste floods her mouth. Infidelity, lies, and the memories of his smooth excuses resurface. For a second, she considers digging deeper, a part of her wanting to believe him, but self-preservation kicks in.
She slams the folder shut. Some ghosts are better left undisturbed.
As the papers are stuffed back into the box, Danielle's resolve hardens. There's no time to chase shadows from a past that's long dead. Her focus is on what lies ahead—the mission, her kids, and somehow holding it all together.
With a final glance at the garden glistening in the morning light, Danielle slams the car door and lets the engine roar to life.
