Chapter Five: Latencies
"Shadows of the Night"
THE GENTLE HUM OF SERVERS FILLS THE AIR, a low drone behind the tension coiling between two figures, locked in silence...
In a dim-lit chamber cast in the cold glow of holographic displays, streams of code flicker across the central monitor—lines cascading faster than the eye can track. One figure, with hands clasped behind their back, watches intently, their expression hidden in shadow.
"It's holding steady," one of them murmurs, their voice laced with cold efficiency. Fingers glide over a console, adjusting the feed as they scrutinize the data. "No sign of activity yet."
The second figure stands further back, arms folded—presence unshakable. "That's what we're counting on," they say, their voice a low rasp. "But it's not time to escalate. Not yet. We wait."
Data scrolls. Nothing out of place—just the static churn of a vast network. But beneath the surface, they sense it—a lurking thread, a potential breach waiting to be exploited.
"Are we going to tell the others?" the first figure asks, glancing over their shoulder, hesitation in their voice. "Don't you think they should know?"
The lead figure shakes their head slowly. "Not yet. We keep this to ourselves—at least until we have control."
"Understood." The unease fades, replaced by the cold professionalism that defines them. They return their attention to the screens, where the data feed continues uninterrupted.
The room is a bubble of anticipation, as if the walls themselves are holding their breath, waiting for the inevitable.
"Stay alert," the lead figure instructs, their voice dropping even lower. "The moment they resurface, we track them. I want everything—their location, their ID, their intent. But until then... we wait."
