Chapter Five: Latencies
"Shadow and Glass"
The figures in the dim room adjust themselves as the faintest sway unsettles their balance. The light from the central display flickering across their faces.
The lead figure steps forward, their fingers trailing over the console. The screen shifts, displaying Rune's access attempt. A faint smile tugs at the corner of their lips. "I can't believe it. Of all people, it's him."
The subordinate glances up. "Do you think he suspects the logs were fabricated?"
The lead figure leans forward, their voice a whisper of satisfaction. "No. He thinks he's found something real. Let him. It'll keep him busy. And when the time comes..." They tap the screen, closing the data trail Rune had been following. "We tighten the noose."
The subordinate hesitates. "And if he digs too deep?"
"Then we reel him in," the lead figure replies coldly. "For now, let him think he's uncovering something. It'll only lead him where we want him to go. He'll do the work for us. All we need is patience."
They step away, their shadow stretching across the room as the display dims.
